Dr. Peter Watson currently serves as vice president for care management, quality and outcomes at Health Alliance Plan (HAP) and as medical director for HAP and HAP Empowered Health Plan, a HAP subsidiary. HAP is part of the Henry Ford Health System.

 

At HAP, Dr. Watson oversees 80 care management personnel who provide population health support for HAP government program (Medicare Advantage, Medicaid, Medicare/Medicaid Dual), commercial, and retail members. Oversight of an additional 30 quality staff includes activities for CMS Stars, HEDIS and health plan accreditation. As a Medical Director, he provides clinical operational leadership for the MI Health Link Dual Demonstration Program, and act as an interface for HAP with the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) and the Michigan Association of Health Plans (MAHP).

 

Dr. Watson has been part of Henry Ford Health System for nearly 21 years. Prior to joining HAP, Dr. Watson spent 11 years overseeing the Henry Ford Medical Group Hospitalist Program. For nine of these years, he was head of the division of Hospital Medicine for the Henry Ford Medical Group, with more than 50 faculty members devoted to inpatient practice, as well as hospice and palliative medicine programs deployed at three system hospitals. He continues to work as an attending staff clinical hospitalist for HFMG while serving full time at HAP. He has been very involved in residency education at Henry Ford Hospital, serving as an associate director of the Transitional Year Residency program (2003 – 2006) and as an associate program director for the Internal Medicine residency (2003 – 2008). He has authored or co-authored over 30 manuscripts, chapters, and scientific abstracts in medical education and hospital quality.

 

Dr. Watson has had leadership roles in many hospital quality initiatives across Henry Ford Health System, including improving collaborative practices in the hospital, standardization of observation medicine practices, and promoting high-quality palliative/end-of life care. Dr. Watson is fellow of American College of Physicians (FACP) and a senior fellow in the Society of Hospital Medicine (SFHM). His state and national leadership positions have included serving on the Board of Trustees of the American Medical Association and key roles in the Michigan State Medical Society, the American College of Physicians, and the Society of Hospital Medicine, which named him Michigan Hospitalist of the Year in 2018.

 

Dr. Watson is a graduate of Kalamazoo College (1990-1994) with a degree in Biology and a graduate of Wayne State University School of Medicine (1995-1999). He completed an internal medicine residency (2001-2002) and chief residency (2002-2003) at Henry Ford Hospital Internal Medicine Residency. Dr. Watson is certified by the American Board if Internal Medicine with a focused practice in hospital medicine. He also holds a Master of Medical Management (MMM) degree from Carnegie Mellon Heinz College of Information Systems and Public Policy (2016-2018).
