Alan Menter, MD, born in England and raised in South Africa, is a graduate of the Medical School of the University of Witwatersrand, South Africa. He represented the South African National Rugby team (Springboks) in 1968, and went on to complete his dermatology residency at Pretoria General Hospital at the University of Pretoria, also in South Africa, and fellowships at Guy’s Hospital, London, UK, and at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Centre at Dallas. Dr. Menter joined Baylor University Medical Centre at Dallas in 1975 and received his American Academy of Dermatology board certification in 1977. From 1979 to 1999, he served as Medical Director of the Baylor Psoriasis Center. Dr. Menter held the position of Clinical Director of the National Psoriasis Tissue Bank from 1996 to 2002. In 1992, he was appointed Chairman of the Division of Dermatology at Baylor University Medical Center and presently holds that position. Dr. Menter is also Clinical Professor of Dermatology at UT Southwestern Medical School in Dallas.

 

Dr. Menter currently serves as the Assistant Editor, Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, Member, Editorial Board, Psoriasis Net, American Academy of Dermatology, Texas State Chairman, Leader’s Society, Dermatology Foundation, Founding Member, Annenberg Circle, Dermatology Foundation, Member, Medical Advisory Board Committee, National Psoriasis Foundation, Member, Editorial Advisory Board, Journal of Clinical Dermatology, and Member, Editorial Board, Specialist Medicine-Dermatology.

 

Dr. Menter’s resume lists some 375 articles, 6 books, and several book chapters. He was co-author of the first gene discovery for psoriasis, published in Science. His extensive research on psoriasis runs the gamut from ultraviolet phototherapy, to biologic therapy, to mapping of genetic patterns of susceptibility. His broad clinical practice includes over 2000 patients on systemic oral and biologic therapy, plus a phototherapy center utilizing Narrowband UVB and PUVA.

 

In August, 2004, Dr. Menter founded the International Psoriasis Council (IPC), an international organization comprised of nine Board Members and 16 Councilors (worldwide specialty dermatologists), dedicated to raising international consciousness and understanding of psoriasis as a serious autoimmune disease with major quality of life implications.

 

In addition to his involvement in psoriasis treatment and research, Dr. Menter served as President of the Texas Dermatological Society in 1995 and was a member of the Board of Directors of the American Academy of Dermatology, 1995-1997. He has been listed in the Best Doctors in America since 1994 and Who’s Who in Medicine and Healthcare since 1996.
