Managing the Spectrum of Behavioral Health Disorders Enduring Webcast: Collaborating to Improve Patient Outcomes

Release date: 10 August, 2009
Expiration date: 31st January, 2011
Estimated time to complete activity: 2 hours

Target Audience
This activity has been designed to meet the educational needs of physicians, pharmacists, and registered nurses practicing in a managed behavioral health care setting.

Purpose Statement
This activity will help providers in a managed behavioral health care setting to: (1) assess evidence-based outcomes associated with the diagnosis, psychotherapy, and pharmacotherapy for schizophrenia, depression, and bipolar disorder; and (2) develop collaborative care strategies to implement practical steps to improve outcomes in patients who require behavioral health treatment for these conditions.

Statement of Need/Program Overview
In today’s health care environment, providers practicing in a managed behavioral health care setting are challenged by the need to effectively diagnose and treat patients with a variety of behavioral health disorders within a framework that ensures quality of care while balancing economic outcomes. These challenges include the management of multifaceted disorders such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and depression. In recent years, the rise of managed behavioral health care has placed added strain on an already over burdened United States health care system. Because of the complex nature and overlap of various behavioral health disorders, there is a need to increase the comfort to select appropriate pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatment options and provide instruction on a collaborative care approach to patient care.

Educational Objectives
After completing this activity, the participant should be better able to:

  - Review new data on the pathophysiology of psychiatric illnesses, including schizophrenia, depression, and other bipolar disorders

  - Review advancements in treatment of these three psychiatric illnesses, including the impact on patient outcomes

  - Identify improvements in the diagnosis of these illnesses

  - Describe an evidence-based treatment plan that utilizes pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic strategies to improve patient outcomes for these three psychiatric illnesses

  - Describe collaborative care techniques to the evidence-based treatment plan for this complex behavioral health patient population
